A semi truck driver who drove a company vehicle into a crowd of people protesting the death of George Floyd has been charged.
The incident occurred in Minnesota on Interstate 35W near downtown.
Authorities have identified the driver as 35-year-old Bogdan Vechirko.
Video circulating on the internet shows people jumping out of the way as Vechirko drove the vehicle through the crowd at a high rate of speed. Vechirko then stops the vehicle and is immediately surrounded by the protesters and pulled out of the vehicle. Several protesters then beat him up before turning him over to police.
While thousands of people were on the highway at the time, authorities reported that they believe no one was seriously injured.
“I think many of you, like me, have watched the video of the truck and the peaceful protesters. I am so incredibly thankful we had no fatalities or no injuries,” said Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
Vechirko was taken to the hospital where he was treated for minor injuries before being transported to an area jail.
He has since been charged with assault.
