Hollywood, FL– A man who claimed that he killed his co-worker in self-defense is now facing premeditated murder charges.
31-year-old Bryan Menocal was taken into custody on Wednesday for the murder of his co-worker 40-year-old Ferdinand “Andy” Williams.
Authorities say they were called to the Wärtsilä North America building at 2900 SW 42nd Street around 6: 45 a.m. regarding a suspicious situation.
“Officers received a radio call of a suspicious incident. When officers arrived on scene they observed the deceased body of a male inside this location,” said police spokesman Christian Lata.
When authorities arrived, they found Williams inside the company’s fuel room lying in a pool of blood with serious injuries to his head.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities say another employee witnessed the Menocal walk into one of the offices with the sledgehammer and then leave the building.
Menocal was found later outside his Deerfield Beach apartment and taken into custody.
Menocal told authorities that he killed Williams in self-defense, however, officials would later learn that Menocal bludgeoned Williams with a sledgehammer after an argument.
Authorities reported that Menocal and Williams had a history but would not provide further details.
“It is just heartbreaking for someone to do that,” the victim’s wife Orbrina Williams said. “Because, knowing him, he walked away, so for you to do that is crazy.”
Williams leaves behind three children, one of which is just four years old.
“He was a great husband. He was so kind-hearted,” she said. “For this to happen, I am still in disbelief. My kids are in disbelief. My 4-year-old son still doesn’t know. He just thinks daddy is sick.”
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
