(FORT PIERCE, Florida)– A man was shot in the buttocks Tuesday by a St. Lucie County deputy who said he was “extremely aggressive” on the North Causeway Bridge in Fort Pierce.

The incident took place just after 4 p.m. when the deputy responded to a man who seemed to be in distress on top of the North Causeway Bridge after observing him while driving along North Highway A1A.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office said the man claimed he wanted to jump off of the bridge because of the “things he did.”

Though the deputy said he tried to de-escalate the situation, the man became “extremely aggressive,” and a “violent struggle ensued,” according to authorities.

During the physical altercation, the deputy was forced to shoot the man in the buttocks.

The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and was later identified as Dylan De Reivera.

De Reivera was then arrested and charged with resisting arrest, aggravated assault, and battery on a law enforcement officer.

The deputy who fired the shot is on paid leave and will be interviewed Monday in accordance with the agency’s policy.
