PORTLAND, Ore — A 25-year-old man who recently moved to Portland from Georgia is facing assault charges after he chewed off a piece of an elderly man’s face and ear.
The incident was reported shortly after 2:00 a.m. on the Cleveland TriMet MAX in Gresham on Tuesday.
Police were called to the area by witnesses who noticed a lot of blood and the suspect attacking the 78-year-old man.
When authorities arrived at the scene, the suspect, Koryn Daniel Kraemer, was still on top of the victim.
Authorities say Kraemer tore off the victim’s ear and a part of his face, revealing his skull.
Kraemer told investigators that he believed the victim was a “robot” based on the way that he smelled.
He also thanked the officers stating that they saved his life:
“Kraemer further stated that he spit out the flesh of the victim that he had consumed and that the responding law enforcement had saved his life by separating him from ‘the robot,'” the Multnomah County DA’s office said.
During an interview, Kraemer admitted that he consumed alcohol, marijuana, and fentanyl pills before the attack.
He is facing second-degree assault charges and pled “not guilty” in court on Wednesday.
The district attorney has asked Kraemer to remain in custody without bail until the trial.
