A tourist is now safe at home after an excursion on a 260-meter-high glass-bottomed suspension bridge left him clinging for his life when the bridge shattered around him.

The incident occurred on May 7th in China’s Piyan Mountain Cultural Tourism Scenic Area.

According to the report, the man was crossing the bridge when suddenly the glass shattered. He was able to hold on to the railing of the bridge until help arrived.

Officials as the attraction say they were notified about the incident at 12:45 p.m. and were able to use safety equipment to transfer the man to a safer area around 1:45 p.m.

“The staff of the scenic area rushed to the scene as soon as possible, brought emergency equipment and successfully transferred the trapped person to a safe area,” said the company said in a statement.

The man was brought to the hospital for a physical and mental evaluation before he was released.

Officials believe the bridge may have shattered because of extreme weather conditions.

On the day of the incident, the area was hit by record-high winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour.

The entire Piyan Mountain Scenic Area has since been shut down as it undergoes safety inspections of all attractions in the area.
