The Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach was placed on lockdown after the driver of a van crashed through a gate at the school’s campus at around noon on Friday.
According to West Palm Beach police, Romen Phelps, 33, of Palm Beach Gardens, collided with trees and breezeway before exiting the van at which point a struggle with a staffer and Palm Beach Schools police officer ensued.
Phelps managed to escape and then ran into the school’s auditorium where he was confronted by a West Palm Beach police officer.
He attacked the officer who then fired a single round at Phelps, striking him.
Officers attempted CPR while waiting for paramedics but he was pronounced dead when West Palm Beach Fire Rescue arrived.
During the ordeal, staff and students were ordered to shelter in place and the school remained on lockdown until dismissal began at around 2:30 PM.
School officials alerted parents via a phone message and assured them there was no immediate threat to students.
No other injuries were reported.
The van being driven by Phelps matched the description of a vehicle that had earlier been reported driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Banyan Blvd.
West Palm Beach police along with FDLE and the State Attorney’s office are investigating and attempting to establish a motive for the rampage.
