COCHISE, AZ–
Cochise County Deputies have arrested a man who flagged them down from the middle of a roadway and confessed to murder.
52-year-old Jay Albert Stevens was taken into custody on Thursday around 1:00 a.m.
Officials say Stevens was in the middle of Central Highway near the area of McNeal when he flagged down the deputy.
The deputy asked if he was ‘alright,’ and that’s when Stevens told him that he’d just shot and killed someone.
The deputy then asked for the address where the person was shot, but Stevens said he did not know it.
He then led the deputy to the home where they found the body of a 61-year-old man.
While authorities did not identify the victim in their initial report, another report stated that the victim is Stevens’ stepfather.
According to that report, Stevens fatally shot his stepfather during an argument about the Bible and claimed that his stepfather was an alcoholic who none of the family liked, and who brainwashed his mother into also becoming an alcoholic.
“This has been building in me for a long time,” said Stevens
He has been taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder.
