Man bites officer helping woman during assault

A 35-year-old man has been arrested after he bit and pepper sprayed an officer who tried to intervene in the assault of a woman.

The incident occurred at a West El Paso Walmart around 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

Authorities say an officer working at the Walmart witnessed the suspect Rajeev Sunkara, assault a woman.

The officer then ran towards Sunkara but the suspect then entered a vehicle.

According to the report, the officer then opened the vehicle and attempted to arrest Sunkara and that’s when Sunkara bit the officer on the hand.

He then pepper sprayed the officer in the face.

When backup arrived to the scene, they arrested Sunkara.

Sunkara was booked into the El Paso County Jail and charged with assault on a peace officer, resisting arrest, search or transport after the woman refused to press charges.

Authorities say the officer required medical treatment for his hand. No other officers were injured.
