An Iowa man found himself in a bit of trouble after he “accidently” brought several guns into a hotel room.
The incident was reported at the W Hotel in Chicago during the 4th of July weekend.
Authorities say an employee of the hotel noticed a handgun and a rifle with a scope and multiple boxes of ammunition and contacted authorities.
After assessing the situation, authorities made contact with the hotel guest 32-year-old Keegan Casteel.
Authorities say they were concerned that Casteel may have been planning a Las Vegas style massacre as his room overlooked the Navy Pier and Lake Michigan, where crowds were expected to gather.
Casteel, however, said that he was at the hotel to propose to his girlfriend and that he was in a rush to pack his gun range bag for the trip and accidently put some of the guns in the wrong bag.
Casteel continued saying that he only realized that the guns were in the bag he brought into the hotel when he was unpacking. At that point, he his girlfriend, and her two children were headed to the beach so Casteel says he left the guns in full view in his room where the staff member found them.
“I didn’t expect anything to happen. I just left them there for the day. Went to the beach. Came back. Went shopping,” Casteel said, according to the Associated Press.
“It’s my fault. I didn’t mean to startle anyone. I understand 100% why I’m here. But like I said, it’s an honest to God accident,” he added.
According to the report, the hotel room has a strict policy about guns on their property so Casteel was taken into custody and charged with two felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.
He has since bonded out of jail and has reportedly proposed to his girlfriend.
