(OKEECHOBEE, FL)– An off-duty Okeechobee detective and a civilian are recovering after the civilian accidentally shot themselves and the detective while handling a gun.
The incident was said to have occurred during a get-together at the detective’s residence.
It was reported that the deputy was showing a friend their gun collection away from the party, when the picked up a handgun and pulled the trigger.
A bullet was said to have gone through the person’s hand and struck the detective in the hip.
The detective did not realize they had been struck until later as they were applying first aid to the victim.
Both the detective and the civilian were treated for non life-threatening injuries.
According to the report, the victim did not believe the gun was loaded.
Investigators are reporting that the shooting was unintentional.
