Legislature approves “Stop Woke” Act which bans Critical Race Theory from schools, businesses

On the heels of passage of the “Parental Rights In Education” bill, Florida state lawmakers approved the Individual Freedom Act by a vote of 24-15 along party lines.

The bill, referred to by Governor Ron DeSantis as the ‘Stop Woke’ act, outlaws material used in classrooms or corporate diversity training that causes individuals to “feel guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress” because they are “superior” due to their race or national origin.

DeSantis is expected to sign the bill into law.

Critical Race Theory states that many institutions in the United States, from government to schools and businesses, were built on a foundation of systemic racism perpetrated by whites against people of color.

Most recently, the CRT debate played a large role in the governor’s race in Virginia, leading to a victory for Glenn Youngkin who promised to ban the practice from schools in his state.

Gov. DeSantis is considered a favorite for the GOP presidential ticket in 2024.
