After three days of deliberations, a Virginia jury has come to a conclusion in the defamation lawsuit between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
The jury ruled that Depp was defamed by Heard in an op-ed published in the Washington Post and awarded him a total of $15 million in damages
Depp launched the lawsuit claiming that his ex-wife allegedly defamed his character and cost him several jobs and his career.
Amber Heard filed a countersuit along the same lines and was awarded $2 million in damages.
While Heard was present for the reading of the verdict, Depp was watching from the UK and issued a statement after his civil court victory was announced thanking the jury for giving him his life back.
“Six years ago, my life, the life of my children, the lives of those closest to me, and also, the lives of the people who for many, many years have supported and believed in me were forever changed,” Johnny Depp said in a lengthy statement released by a spokesperson in the aftermath of the verdict.
“All in the blink of an eye. False, very serious and criminal allegations were levied at me via the media, which triggered an endless barrage of hateful content, although no charges were ever brought against me. It had already traveled around the world twice within a nanosecond and it had a seismic impact on my life and my career. And six years later, the jury gave me my life back. I am truly humbled,” he said.
Depp continued: “From the very beginning, the goal of bringing this case was to reveal the truth, regardless of the outcome. Speaking the truth was something that I owed to my children and to all those who have remained steadfast in their support of me. I feel at peace knowing I have finally accomplished that.”
Depp also thanked his many fans for their support and kindness, Judge Penney Azcarate, the jurors, the court staff and the court sheriffs for their efforts.
Johnny has been playing concerts in the U.K. with Jeff Beck for the last three days and it is unclear how long he plans to be on tour with him. He was also joined backstage by model and former girlfriend Kate Moss, who testified in his defense contradicting Heard’s claims that Depp threw her down the stairs.
Johnny had sued for $50 million while Amber filed a countersuit for $100 million.
