(INDIAN RIVER COUNTY,FL )– Officials in Indian River County are in the process of opening their emergency shelters in preparation for Subtropical Storm Nicole.
A special-needs shelter will be available at Treasure Coast Elementary, while the Freshman Learning Center will accommodate the general-population shelter, and the 800 wing of the Freshman Learning Center will serve as the county’s pet-friendly shelter.
The shelters are expected to be available to the public starting Wednesday at 7:00 a.m.
Indian River is the first county to open emergency shelters.

According to the National Hurricane Center Nicole is expected to reach Florida’s east coast as a category 1 hurricane Wednesday evening and travel through the area through Thursday.
