Lawmakers in Indian River County have decided to extend their mask ordinance in to the new year.

Commissioners voted 4-1 on Tuesday to extend the ordinance for an additional 60 days.

The extension comes as multiple states continue to see a surge in coronavirus cases.

Under the ordinance, Indian River County employees who serve the public are required to wear a mask. Those using public transportation and or entering county buildings are also required to wear a mask.

While the mask mandate has been extended, commissioners did eliminate fines for those who are caught not complying with the ordinance. This choice goes along with the September 25th executive order by Governor Ron DeSantis that bars the local government from giving fines to people who do not wear masks.
