A New Jersey high school teacher has been suspended from her job after she allegedly mocked a Muslim student by calling him a terrorist.
The incident was reported at Ridgefield Memorial High School sometime last week.
According to the student’s parents, the teen asked the teacher for more time to finish an assignment, that’s when the teacher replied “We don’t negotiate with terrorists.”
“It perpetuates the stereotypes against Arabs and Muslims and that, for the past 20 years, this is what organizations like CAIR and others have been trying to combat,”Selaedin Maksut, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Maksut told NBC News on Tuesday.
“You’d like think 20 years later these would be dying down. But here they are, being used by a teacher in a classroom, so it’s very alarming to see.”
The teacher has been suspended pending the investigation and that it “intends to pursue any and all legal remedies.”
The Ridgefield School District has since released a statement saying it “has absolutely no tolerance for any sort discrimination against any student or staff member” and strives “to create an inclusive environment where students’ and staff members’ race, religion, national origin and sexual orientation are embraced.”
