Authorities in Lakeland, Florida are reporting that an officer fatally shot a gunman who opened fire on a woman just seconds after they arrived to the scene.

The incident was reported on Sunday around 6:30 a.m. at an apartment complex.

Police say they were called to the area do to the report of a domestic argument.

When authorities arrived, they found 35-year-old Howayne T. Gayle pointing a gun at the 37-year-old victim.

When the 37-year-old victim noticed police, she started towards them and that’s when Gayle opened fire on her. Officers then returned fire, fatally striking Gayle.

The victim was taken to an area hospital where she later died from her injuries.  The suspect was said to have died at the scene.

According to witnesses, the victim and the suspect had recently broken up and were arguing because the suspect reportedly broke into the victim’s condo.  It was also said that the victim’s 19-year-old daughter witnessed the incident.
