Officials in Fort Pierce are currently searching for a driver who struck a young girl with their vehicle and fled the scene. The incident occurred around 6:35 a.m. near the intersection of Skylark Drive and Oleander Avenue.
Authorities say the 10-year-old identified as Jaceny Berenice Rodriguez-Gonzalez was walking to her bus when a person driving a white vehicle ignored the school bus stop arms and flashing lights and blew past the bus.
The driver then struck the child and continued down the road.
The child was taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center in critical condition but has since died of her injuries.
Authorities are still searching for the driver.
