Forecasters watching a system off Africa for development

NWS 8-7-22

(MIAMI, FL)- The National Hurricane Center is monitoring an area of showers and thunderstorms emerging off the coast of Africa which may bring an end to an otherwise quiet summer in the topical Atlantic.

Forecasters say conditions appear favorable for storm development over the next 5 days, giving the system a 40% chance of becoming a tropical depression.

So far this year only three named storms have formed, none of which became hurricanes.

Should this system reach tropical storm status, it would be named Danielle.

Currently, the system is moving west to west-northwest at 20 MPH.
