
A Virginia Tech football player has been arrested for allegedly beating his Tinder match to death after finding out that the match was actually a guy.
The incident occurred at an apartment complex on May 31st in Blacksburg.
Authorities say 18-year-old Isimemen Etute matched on the dating app with whom he believed to be a woman named “Angie.” The two then decided to meet at Angie’s apartment sometime in April. When Etute went back to the apartment in May, however, he discovered that Angie was actually a 40-year-old man named Jerry Smith.
Etute told police that he became enraged and attacked Smith by punching him and stomping on him. Etute said he heard Smith making a gurgling sound and left the apartment without calling the police.
Smith’s body was later found by police during a welfare check.
Etute was arrest but has since been granted bond on Wednesday.
He has since been ordered to live with his parents and to keep in contact with his attorney.
is on suspension from the school and its football team while the investigation continues.
Authorities revealed that Smith died from blunt force trauma to the head.
