(NEW PORT RICHEY, Florida)– A woman was shot and killed while lying in bed with her two children on Tuesday.

The incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. at a home on Menifee Court in New Port Richey, which is located about 35 miles northwest of Tampa.

According to the Pasco Sheriff’s Office, investigators are calling it a “targeted hit” and have not released the identity of the victim.

Two women were in the home at the time, one of whom was sleeping on the couch when a masked man knocked at the door and then kicked it in, Sheriff Chris Nocco said at a press conference.

The man then went into a bedroom, where the victim was asleep with two children.

The shooter then turned on a light in the room, waking the victim.

“The light comes on, she sees the suspect walk into the door,” Nocco said. “She sits up. As she sits up, she says, ‘Don’t shoot me.’ The suspect then fires one round at her. She falls off the bed. He fires another round directly at her, striking her.”

Officials say the shooter then walked out of the home and fled the scene in an unknown vehicle.

The children in bed with the victim were unharmed.

The shooter has been described as a 5’10 man with a heavy build wearing dark clothing and a black skull-type mask.
