LEESBURG, FL– Authorities are searching for answers after a 37-year-old woman was found shot to death in the laundry room of her home.
The Leesburg Police Department says they received a call from a friend of the victim around 2:39 a.m. Monday stating that they believed their friend was dead.
When authorities arrived, they found Melissa Smith shot to death in the attached converted laundry room of the home she shared with her mother.
“This friend came to the residence looking for the victim, and couldn’t get an answer from her, knocked on the door and that’s when the mother and the friend found her in the utility room,” Leesburg Police Capt. Scott Mack told reporters.
Investigators say they are working on several leads but declined to share any more information publicly.
Neighbors told reporters that they noticed authorities using K-9s to search a nearby field.
