Florida woman dies in suspected gator attack

ENGELWOOD, FL- A southwest Florida woman was found dead in a pond near her home on Friday night, the victim of an apparent alligator attack.

Sarasota county deputies say Rose Marie Wiegand was seen falling into the water at the Boca Royale Golf & Country Club.

Officials say two alligators were seen near the woman and grabbed her while she was in the water.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were called to the scene and removed two alligators, measuring 7 and 8 feet in length, from the pond.

The name of the victim has not been released and the county medical examiner will determine the exact cause of the death.

Since 1999 there have been 16 fatal alligator attacks in Florida according to FWC.
