A 42-year-old woman has been taken into custody for the death of a child after the conclusion of a police investigation.
According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office the child, who’s identity has been concealed, was pronounced dead in September after authorities were called to a home home in the 1100 block of Alexander Bend in Weston due to an unresponsive child.
Fire rescue personnel noted that the child was bedridden because of a medical condition but also appeared to be underweight and had rashes and bedsores throughout his arms, legs, back and torso.
Because of the condition of the child, deputies then obtained a search warrant for the home belonging to Lashawn Hampton, to investigate possible criminal neglect.
The medical examiner’s office later reported that the child died due to a lethal combination of acetaminophen (a pain reliever) and diphenhydramine (an antihistamine, such as Benadryl.)
Police then ruled the child’s death a homicide.
Hampton was taken into custody on Thursday. She has been charged with first- degree murder.
