Florida Sees Rise in Background Checks for Gun Purchases

More Floridians are considering purchasing guns, according to newly-released state records that show an increase in the number of background checks being processed since the death of George Floyd in Minnesota last month.

According to The Tampa Bay Times, Florida has processed 30,657 background checks in the weeks after Floyd’s May 25 police-involved death.

That amount is twice the number over the same period last year.

Buyers must usually undergo a background check in order to buy a gun in Florida.

One week after Floyd’s death, which was Monday, June 1, the state processed 8,597 background checks that day. That is more than four times higher than the first Monday in June last year.
