A mother who has been working as the assistant manager at a Dollar Tree is accused of scheming with her teenage son to steal from the establishment.
Melisha Ford was taken into custody on charges of scheming to defraud and filing a false report of crime earlier this week.
Investigators say that one of Ford’s tasks as a manager is to collect all of the cash made at the store that day and deposit it in the bank after closing.
Ford, however, collected the money on Aug. 13, 14, and 15, put it into a safety deposit bag but neglected to deposit the money.
The store’s district manager and loss prevention noticed that Ford was not depositing the money promptly and had a meeting with her about the possible implications of her actions.
Despite the meeting, Ford again neglected to deposit the daily funds on Aug. 19 and 20.
On Aug. 21st, Clearwater police say they received a call from Ford stating that she had been robbed by a gunman as she was closing the store.
After an investigation into the robbery, authorities found that the person who robbed the store was Ford’s 15-year-old son.
Ford eventually confessed that she schemed with her son to steal from the store and that she was never in any danger.
Authorities say she stole approximately $5,068.
