Police say a Florida man who thought he heard an intruder outside his bedroom door shot his pregnant wife instead.
On Wednesday morning at around 1:30 a.m., the man heard a noise outside the bedroom door of their home in Stuart, not realizing his wife was not in the room, sheriff officials say.
The man then shot his wife, and called 911 immediately telling police he accidentally shot his wife, Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said.
The woman who was 6 months pregnant, was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to WPBF doctors were able to save the baby.
Deputies said a 2-year-old child was in the home when the shooting happened.
Officials did not release the name of the victims due to Marsy’s Law. The law, approved by voters, was designed to protect victims of crime.
Police say they will continue to investigate.
