Police in Hillsborough County are reporting that one person is dead and another person is in critical condition after an attempted murder-suicide.

The incident began on Tuesday on the State Road 574 northbound exit ramp of Interstate 75 in Hillsborough County.

Investigators say 31-year-old Gregory Donnell Smalls was driving a white Honda Pilot on the interstate when he forced his 28-year-old wife off of the road and into a ditch in her black Infiniti QX60.

Small reportedly then got out of his vehicle and began shooting at his wife’s vehicle.  He then forced his wife out of her vehicle and into his and drove towards the nearby Ellenton Premium Outlets.

State troopers say they responded to the report of shots fired at 4:40 p.m. but only located the wife’s vehicle.

They as well as deputies from Hillsborough and Manatee counties joined forces to find the couple.

Authorities say they got a break around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday when they heard a gunshot near a line of trees near the outlet mall.

Smalls was found dead by the Manatee County SWAT team, while the wife was found suffering from several gunshot wounds.

She was brought to an area hospital in serious condition after being shot multiple times.
