Brooksville, FL– A Florida man working in his yard using an excavator, stumbled upon a military missile.
The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office says they received a call from the homeowner on Jan. 20 and immediately called for backup.
The sheriff’s office called in the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Team who then called the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team at MacDill Air Force Base, officials said.
“Once both teams were on the scene it was learned that the homeowner had dug up the military ordnance with his excavator,” the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office reported. “After several X-Rays and research, it was determined that the ordinance was a World War II practice rocket.
The report did not say if the homeowner struck the rocket or if it was just exposed while they were digging near it but thankfully it was not active.
“The rocket was deemed safe to move and MacDill EOD safely removed the rocket and transported it back to Tampa.”
It is unclear what will happen to the rocket once it is returned to Tampa.
