A 51-year-old man died over the weekend when an explosion occurred at a party he was attending.
The incident was reported outside of a home in the 2900 block of 3rd Court near DeLand on Memorial Day.
The Volusia Sheriff’s Office says they were called to the home around 4:00 a.m.
Witnesses stay the victim, Michael D. Riedinger, went into the backyard to tend to the bonfire before an explosion occurred.
When the witnesses went to check on Riedinger, they found him ” lying unresponsive near the fire with extensive injuries.”
Riedinger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators reported that Riedinger suffered “severe injuries that appeared to have been caused by an explosion.”
One of the witnesses told police to have heard hissing like a firework about to go off before the explosion, however, authorities did not find any fireworks in the area.
The source of the explosion is still under investigation.
