A Lower Keys couple working as caregivers were arrested and charged for allegedly stealing nearly $90,000 over the course of a year from an ill Sugarloaf Key couple, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Joseph Bryon Symington, 41, and Elizabeth McKay Jacobson, 40, were charged with multiple counts of larceny and fraud.

Symington and Jacobson were working as caregivers for a sick couple, and had access to the couples’ finances to purchase requested needs, such as groceries and medications.

The victims informed deputies in August that they noticed many unauthorized and peculiar purchases within their bank statements, also citing that their debit card would not be returned on time.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Unit discovered Symington and Jacobson stole $88,935 from the victims from August 2021 to July 2022.

Symington was imprisoned Oct. 24 and Jacobson was imprisoned Thursday. Warrants were obtained and issued for the duo, stated the Sheriff’s Office.
