(FLORIDA) — A teenage girl was critically injured after a shark attacked her at a north Florida beach.
It happened on Thursday at Keaton Beach in northwest Florida’s Taylor County.
The Sheriff’s Office said the girl was in just five feet of water when the shark bit her.
“A family member reportedly jumped in the water and beat the shark until the juvenile was free,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
She was airlifted to a hospital in Tallahassee with serious injuries.
The sheriff’s office said the type of shark is unknown but it was at least 9 feet long.

Another Florida child is in critical condition after being struck by lightning Thursday in Hillsborough County.
Calvin Coli was at the Williams Park boat ramp in Riverview about to put his boat in the water when the child was zapped.
He told his wife it was probably too dangerous to put their boat in the water.
Be careful this July 4th weekend…if you hear thunder, stay out of the water….
