Officials are reporting that an American Airlines flight going to Miami on Thursday was delayed after a passenger managed to get into the cockpit and damaged some of the plane’s controls.

The incident occurred on a flight from San Pedro Sula, Honduras to Miami.

Authorities say the passenger rushed the cockpit and was able to get in through an open door.  They then proceeded to damage the plane’s controls before exiting through the cockpit window.

Police were able to locate and arrest the passenger.

“We applaud our outstanding crew members for their professionalism in handling a difficult situation,” American Airlines said in a statement.

The plane was grounded and passengers were forced to wait for a replacement plane.

Passengers were eventually able to board a new plane at 9:30 p.m. local time.
