Fire breaks out in Delray condo of former NBA player

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — An early morning fire at a Delray Beach condominium has displaced several residents who were forced to evacuate.
The fire broke out around 5:00 a.m. in a fifth floor unit owned by former Philadelphia 76ers basketball player Jayson Williams.
Williams told WPTV he was working out at the gym and was not home at the time the fire started in his bedroom and bathroom located in the Ocean Place high-rise building along South Ocean Boulevard.

One witness said there was reportedly a loud explosion before the fire broke out.
Williams was a first-round NBA draft pick in 1990 and played for nine seasons until he was forced to retire due to a leg injury in 2000.
He also served prison time for his role in the accidental shooting death of a limousine driver in 2002.

Firefighters said no one was hurt and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
