A father from Navarre Beach, Florida has been charged in the drowning death of his 1-year-old daughter after authorities say he slept all day instead of watching his child.
The incident was reported on Sunday.
According to the report, 29-year-old Tracy Potter told authorities while walking back to a woman’s home with his daughter, he “became dizzy and short of breath.” That’s when he decided to sit on a bench and ended up falling asleep.
He was later woken up by a Santa Rosa County deputy. The deputy reportedly offered Potter a ride home but Potter refused later explaining that “he had some marijuana in his pocket and he didn’t want to get in trouble.”
He then walked to the woman’s house.
The woman told police that found Potter asleep on a picnic table in her backyard around 1:00 p.m. and told him to come inside and sleep on the couch.
Around 7 p.m. Potter reportedly woke up and began asking about his daughter. The woman told Potter that she hadn’t seen the child since even before she found him at the picnic table and then contacted authorities to report the child missing.
With the help of a neighbor, authorities found the young girl dead in a canal behind a home.
Potter was arrested and charged with negligent manslaughter for failing “to supervise his child, which resulted in her death.”
