(PALM BEACH GARDENS, FLA) — Landlords in the city of Palm Beach Gardens may soon be legally required to give “fair notice” to tenants when raising rent, WPTV reports.

The sudden and growing number of rent hikes has renting residents asking for help from community leaders.

The proposed ordinance would mandate that residential landlords looking to raise the rent by at least 5% give 60 days’ notice before the lease is up.

Landlords looking to raise rent before the lease is up would be prohibited from doing so, following the ordinance.

Tenants renting without a lease would also be provided notice, each by the type of agreement with their landlord.

Similar ordinances are in effect in West Palm Beach, Lake Worth Beach, and Royal Palm Beach.

The proposal will be voted on by city council members on Thursday and is expected to pass.
