The wife of Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman (El Chapo) has reportedly been arrested on drug charges of her own.
31-year-old Emma Coronel Aispuro was arrested at the Dulles International Airport on Monday, after authorities say they found that she not only aided her husband in his famous escape from a Mexican prison in 2015, but that she also has been conspiring to run a drug operation in the U.S .
According to the report, Aispuro who is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Mexico, conspired to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine, 500 grams or more of methamphetamines’, one kilogram of heroin, and 1,000 kilograms of marijuana in the U.S.
She is expected to make her first court appearance in Washington via video conference on Tuesday.
Other details have not been made public at this time.
Aispuro’s husband El Chapo, reigned as one of the most prolific drug lords in Mexico for over 25 years. His cartel known as the Sinaloa cartel, was responsible for smuggling large sums of cocaine into the U.S. over that time. He was eventually imprisoned by the Mexican government but managed to escape through a tunnel that his cartel dug under the prison in 2015. He was later imprisoned again in 2017. According to reports, his wife was allegedly planning another escape, however, El Chapo was extradited to the U.S. where he is now serving a live sentence.
