The entertainment industry lost a legend this month.
Clarence Williams III who starred as Linc Hayes in the “Mod Squad” fully embraced the cool undercover cop role on the breakout series, alongside Peggy Lipton and Michael Cole.
He was 81.
The cause was colon cancer, his manager, Allan Mindel, says.
“The Mod Squad,” which ran from 1968 to 1973, was one of the first of it’s kind, a prime-time network series that focused on three hippies in trouble with the law.
He was raised in a creative family that included his father a musician and his musical obsessed grandparents.
Mr. Williams once crashed on Bill Cosby’s couch when he was down on his luck in Hollywood.
A native of New York, Williams was a brilliant actor who’s career spanned over five decades in theater, television, and film.
His marriage to actress Gloria Foster ended in divorce.
Survivors include his daughter Jamey Phillips and a sister.
