BATON ROUGE, LA — A dog owner is facing negligent homicide charges after he failed to restrain his dog, resulting in it attacking a child.
The incident occurred over the weekend at a home in the 25000 block of Kendalwood Road.
Authorities say the dog, which was left to roam the neighborhood attacked a 7-year-old girl who was playing outside a relative’s home.
“The relative attempted to intervene and stop the attack by striking the dog with a walking cane; however, the dog continued to maul the victim in the front yard,” according to the police department.
The child was taken to an area hospital where medical staff revealed that she died due to “substantial damage to her skull.”
The pit bull terrier was located and captured by animal control. Authorities say the animal had blood around its mouth.
The dog’s owner was eventually identified as 20-year-old Erick Lopez, who lived less than 150 away from the residence where the child was attacked.
According to police, Lopez was not home at the time but acknowledged that he would often leave the dog unrestrained and it would wander the neighborhood.
Lopez was arrested and charged with negligent homicide by authorities.
