A local man has been rushed to the hospital with serious injuries after he fell off of his bike and into a lake where he was bitten by an alligator.

The incident was reported in Martin County around 11 a.m.

Authorities say the bicyclist was traveling along a trail at Halpatiokee Park when he suddenly lost control of his bike and fell down an embankment and into a body of water.

Once the cyclist hit the water, a 9-foot gator grabbed ahold of him.

The cyclist was able to break free of the gator and crawled to an area where he was assisted by a bystander.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was more than a mile away from the park area.

Once the victim got to the park area, he was medical helicopter crew.

A trapper has since located the animal involved in the attack.

FWC Officers have taken over the investigation.
