Authorities in Vero Beach are currently searching for a missing kayaker.
42-year-old Donald Waters was said to have taken his inflatable kayak out Tuesday morning from Mulligan’s Beach House on Ocean Drive and Beachland Boulevard.
A friend told authorities that when he spoke to Waters on a phone around 10:00 a.m., he said he was lost:
“He said he was lost and he was confused where he was (and) he couldn’t see shore anymore,” The friend told Treasure Coast Newspapers.
The friend then contacted authorities at 8:30 p.m. after not hearing from Waters.
The Coast guard reported that the last time Waters phone communicated with a cell tower was around 9:40 p.m. about 1.5 miles off of the shore and about 5 miles North of Vero.
At no point did Waters contact authorities directly.
The Coast guard is currently searching for Waters by boat and say they plan to search for him as long as possible.
At this point, Waters, nor any of his items have been found in the water.
Police did, however, say that his vehicle was still parked at the plaza at 10:30 p.m.
If you have any information on Waters’ whereabouts, you are asked to call your local police department.
