The CDC teamed up with the Florida Department of Health to sound the alarm about “one of the worst outbreaks of meningococcal disease among gay and bisexual men in U.S. history.”
The health agency is investigating the deadly outbreak after at least 24 cases and six deaths were reported in Florida.
The deadly bacteria travels through the bloodstream as the meningitis infection causing the lining of the brain and spinal cord to swell.
In response to this outbreak, the CDC recommends gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men get a meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) if they live in Florida.
And to consult a healthcare provider about getting vaccinated if they are traveling to Florida.
