A bus driver has been arrested after they allegedly ran over a 15-year-old girl and then fled the scene.

The incident was reported on January 17th in New York.

Authorities say the driver 55-year-old Aleksandr Patlakh accidently ran down the teen as he was attempting to make a turn with the bus.

Surveillance video shows the wheels of the bus completely rolling over the teen’s body.

Police say when they arrived to the scene, the victim was lying on the ground with ” trauma to the head” and was ” unconscious and unresponsive.”

EMS then pronounced the teen dead at the scene.

The driver eventually turned himself in days later and told investigators that he was unaware that he struck the teen.

A witness, however, told authorities that Patlakh seemed to slow the bus down after striking the teen but kept going:

“The weird thing was he slowed down after he hit her, which is kind of shaky,” witness Michael Aryeh told PIX 11. “Either way he should have come out to see if anything happened. But he didn’t.”

Another witness told reporters that because the teen was so tiny, it is possible that the driver might not have known that he struck her.

“This poor little girl. She was just a small, small human,” another witness told CBS New York. “And the bus driver probably just didn’t realize that he unfortunately took someone’s life with the way he was driving.”

Witnesses also reported that there were multiple children on the bus at the time of the accident. No one else was injured.

Patlakh has since been charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to use due care.
