BURLINGTON, NC– Authorities in North Carolina had no problem identifying a home burglary suspect after the suspect accidentally left his severed finger at the crime scene.
Officers say they were called to a home in Burlington around 7 a.m. on Oct. 6 in relation to an attempted burglary.
The resident told authorities that they’d gone outside to start their vehicle when they were approached by an armed suspect while walking back inside.
The suspect and resident got into a struggle and that’s when the suspect discharged his weapon. A bullet grazed the resident’s chest and because the resident was not seriously injured, he was able to close the door on the suspect.
When authorities arrived at the home, they found a glove with the suspect’s finger still inside.
Authorities believe the suspect’s finger was severed when the resident quickly closed the door.
Using the severed finger, authorities were able to identify the suspect as 67-year-old Vernon Forest Wilson.
Wilson has since been taken into custody. He is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and inflicting serious injury, police said. His bail is set at $250,000.
