UPDATE: The mother of two girls found dead in a Broward County canal is a person of interest.
The bodies of nine-year-old Destiny and seven-year-old Daysha Hogan were found in a canal in Lauderhill on Tuesday.
Police say 36-year-old Tinessa Hogan never reported her daughters missing, and neighbors told investigators the mom was seen swimming in the canal the day before the bodies were found.
No cause of death has been revealed, and police describe the case as very complicated.
ORIGINAL STORY:
A missing persons case is now a homicide investigation in Broward County after the bodies of two girls were discovered in a Lauderhill canal yesterday.
One body was found just hours after another girl’s body was found in the same canal, and police are trying to determine if there’s a connection.
Lauderhill Police Lieutenant Michael Santiago says the first child appears to be between 10 and 13 years old and the second girl may also be a pre-teen.
The first child was found just after noon, and the second was found around 8:45 p.m., Santiago said.
“We can’t determine at this point if they’re related, because it’s just, the juvenile was just found,” Santiago said Tuesday evening at a news conference. “However, detectives are trying to piece the puzzle together.”
Police are trying to identify the girls, but missing children databases have not yielded any results, he said. Police say the bodies have been in the canal for a lengthy period of time.

The body of the first child showed no indication of trauma, according to Santiago.
