Fort Myers Beach, FL– The remains of a 72-year-old Florida man who was reported missing during Hurricane Ian have been discovered inside of a sunken boat.
The Lee County Sheriff reported that they received a call from Salty Sam’s marina on Thursday after workers noticed a sunken boat in the wreckage they hadn’t noticed before.
Authorities pulled the sailboat named “Good Girl” from the water and discovered the body of its owner James “Denny” Hurst in it.
Officials say Hurst was last seen on Sept. 28 as Hurricane Ian struck Florida’s West coast as a Category 4.
Hurst’s family told officials that he told them he planned to ride out the storm on the boat.
Hurst’s family reported him missing after not being able to get in touch with him.
With the finding of Hurst’s body, the Hurricane Ian death toll has now reached 75 in Fort Myers and 141 nationwide.
