POMPANO BEACH, FL– A bank robbery suspect is dead after he allegedly opened fire on the officers who were pursuing him.
The incident occurred Monday near East Atlantic Boulevard.
Deputies with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office began following a vehicle believed to have been connected to a robbery at the TD Bank branch on N. Federal Highway Monday morning.
When the suspect noticed he was being followed, he fled:
“The suspect fled just recklessly just in and out of traffic all throughout the Pompano area,” said Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony.
A deputy attempted to stop the driver on East Atlantic Boulevard and that’s when the driver crashed into a light pole.
Deputies put up a perimeter in the area of East Atlantic Boulevard and Northeast Fourth Avenue in an effort to take the suspect into custody.
The driver eventually got out of the vehicle and pointed his gun at multiple deputies.
According to the report, about four deputies opened fire on the suspect.
“He fell back into the car, which was burning, and our deputies went in there, extracted him out of the car while it was on fire, and tried to perform life-saving techniques to get him to survive,” said Tony.
The suspect only identified as a middle-aged white male,  did not survive.
The incident is still under investigation.
FBI is also investigating whether or not the suspect was involved in the bank robbery.
