While babysitting her nephew Tuesday evening, Caitlyn Smith found a gun in the house.

Thinking it was unloaded, she began taking selfies with the firearm. Unfortunately, it then went off, striking the 10-year-old in the stomach.

According to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the boy was taken to a Houston area hospital in critical condition and underwent surgery. He’s now stable and recovering.

Smith was arrested Wednesday, charged with causing serious bodily injury to a child. She’s due in court on Friday.
