A father is facing first-degree murder and arson charges after he reportedly set fire to a home where his child was sleeping inside.
The incident occurred just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday at a home in Shawnee, Kansas.
Shawnee firefighters and officials from Overland Park and Consolidated Fire District No. 2 worked to put out the fire that was said to have engulfed the entire hours.
Authorities were able to locate the child who was pronounced dead at the scene.
No one else was injured.
While the child’s identity and date of birth have not be revealed, several sources are stating that the child was born in 2020.
Authorities say Nicholas Ecker, who has been identified by the media as the child’s father, was taken into custody on Monday in connection with the fire.
Some reports state that before the incident, Ecker was facing misdemeanor charges after breaking a protection order towards the child’s mother earlier this month.
He is being held on a $1 million bond.
The incident is still under investigation.
