(WEST PALM BEACH, Florida)– While prices continue to rise at the grocery store, shoppers are finding that the cost of eggs is going up more than usual and the CDC is saying that avian flu is to blame.

Avian influenza — also called avian flu or bird flu — is a virus that infects poultry such as turkey, ducks, geese, chickens, and other waterfowl or domestic birds. In the United States, bird flu is approaching record levels of infection.

Families and restaurants are now paying elevated prices for eggs as the outbreak impacts 47 states.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 58 million birds have been infected with the avian flu as of January 6th and the CDC doesn’t believe there will be a decrease in the affected domestic populations.
