Authorities say pregnant Florida woman died of pregnancy complications while in custody

Ambulance Staff In Attendance

(OKEECHOBEE, FL)– The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s office is reporting that a 19-year-old inmate who passed away while in custody, died from pregnancy complications.
Kaiytlian Barnes was found dead in her cell during roll call checks on Sept. 13.
When detention staff realized she was not breathing, they attempted CPR on Barnes, however, their efforts were in vain.
The county Medical Examiner’s Office has since determined that Barnes and her unborn baby died due to eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and acute fatty liver:
“Ms. Barnes had non-specific changes in the lungs and liver, which are suggestive indications of but not limited to eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and acute fatty liver during pregnancy,” authorities said on Facebook.

“Each contributes to the death of Kaiytlian Barnes and, ultimately, her unborn child,” the sheriff’s office continued.

The sheriffs office has offered their condolences to the family:

“We hope this brings closure to Miss Barnes’s family and friends. The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office Administration & Detention Staff take those individuals’ daily management, care, and custody seriously.”

Barnes has been held at the Okeechobee County jail since May 18 after being charged with transmission of child porn/possession of child porn and sex act involving an animal.
